We welcome you to our interim website.

Operating since 1992, Graaph Design is an award-winning firm of building and interior designers providing high quality, innovative design services to a range of clients including; hospitality, commercial, institutional and residential projects.

We believe design is a collaborative process in which the client is central. Our projects seek to embody a marriage of thoughtful design and ecology, creating spaces that are comfortable and lyrical. We have no prescribed style; the particulars of the site and the users needs and desires guide the design process from inception through to the construction and completion of the project.

Minimum Impact Maximum Effect

The following goals form the foundation of our practice. Within each we seek to gain the greatest effect with the smallest expenditure of resource.

Goal #1   Harmonize with the Site.

The Site is the starting point; we assess the site conditions, constraints and views. From this we determine the best strategy to meet needs and goals.

Goal #2   Build as Little as Possible.

Reducing floor space saves resources, saves energy, and can also save money; we also look for opportunities to work with existing structures and improve them, in their thermal and passive performance, and aesthetically.

Goal #3   Minimize Energy Dependence.

The single largest impact over a building’s lifetime is energy usage. The use of renewable energy sources, the application of passive solar design, solar control, natural ventilation, low energy lighting, high insulation, energy efficient appliances, and energy management systems reduce energy demands of a building.

Goal #4   Maximize Resource Efficiency.

The selection of materials has a significant ecological impact. Careful material selection and specification yields considerable cost savings, reduction in pollution, and where possible are of recycled materials, or materials that are obtained from a renewable/sustainable source.

On-site retention of stormwater, treatments of effluent for re-use, together with water efficient appliances conserve water and lower usage costs.

Landscapes with drought resistant native plants and perennial ground covers allow the creation of a building that is more appropriate for the Australian Environment.

Goal #5  Demonstrate the Beauty of Design.

We strongly believe that a building’s design must be uplifting and inspire delight in the natural world. Ecology is the true basis of good design – in daylighting and rich materials, in buildings that naturally suit their site and climate.
